LAW ENFORCEMENT & AUTISM:
Are Local Police Officers Trained to Handle Situations Involving Autistic Individuals?
Stephen D. Shallo
abstract
American society has been slow to recognize the challenges created by autism-- a neuro-developmental disorder which significantly impairs brain function, limits communication and, restricts social abilities. Only in the last two decades have specialized programs and services begun to take shape; major institutions including medicine, business, and education have made steady improvements to adequately respond to the distinct needs of people with autism. As a result of this progress these individuals are attending school, using public programs and services, and seeking employment in increasing numbers. Despite these discernible benefits, the criminal justice system has consistently lagged behind in its efforts. Law enforcement agencies throughout the United States have received considerable attention for their failure to adapt their service to special circumstances created by the disorder. Analysis of a local police department provided data suggesting analogous deficiencies in Westchester County. These police officers are not adequately trained to handle situations involving individuals with autism.
