Sports Groups Aim at Pier 40

The above link may not work, but the article I used was out of the Wall Street Journal, the actual paper, so I had to try and find it online.

The article discusses Pier 40 in Manhattan and how community groups have created plans for what they call 'the largest pier in Hudson River Park.' A group of youth sports league enlisted an architecture firm to help them create their proposal which would include 600 residential units, but would create 10.5 acres of open space which would include a sports field and track. They say that this would make the pier sustainable financially, but also create open space for the many families nearby.

Another developer has a similar plan but would like to put office space for technology companies instead of housing. He says that he already has companies interested in relocating there.

I think it really depends what kind of housing they will put in. If the housing is semi-affordable housing that is upkept, it could be a great way to move families into the community. However, technology companies are on the rise, and they have been known to make the best profits and benefit their community. This question should come down to the people of NY and their public administrators. What do they need? What do they expect as citizens? The questions shouldn't necessarily be related to which is more profitable but which will increase the Happy Planet Index of that area. Wink
