Personal reflection
This Fall 2014 semester, I learned so much about issues in the workplace due to differences in morals and values. In Industry, Theory and Practice, I learn that social media was a big part of workplace issues. Some of the issues we talked about are harassment, leaking secrets or confidential information, stealing, bullying, conflict of interest, discrimination and plagiarism especially in the media industry. We learned some ways in which workers can handle hostile environments. The importance of ethics in the workplace. Some of the topics I enjoyed talking about was privacy in work environments because I did not think on it as much. I understand that it waste company time. I never really sat down to think about it as much. So as a result, I now understand about certain ethics policy I can adhere to in whatever company I work at. These ethics are guidelines that help to set a ground rules. I think it is better to know what the standards in the beginning for employees to have an understanding of what they are expected to do and not to do.
Some of the things that stood out were the difference between social media and social networking. I got to understand that social media is the platform where people are about to connect. It has content that is shared between users. It can just be one way. When it is two way and users interact with each other, it becomes social networking. Why this stood out to me was because I never saw the importance of interacting on social media as much but I now see how connecting with others makes such a big difference. My aim is to use what I have learned about in this course when I go to work. I just got a job and I am cautious not to go on social media now that I learn about how companies track what their employees do. I learn that it is unethical to be doing personal things on work time. I never saw it as being a big deal but now, I am very conscious of what I do.
In addition, I understand the importance of knowing my rights as an employee. Learning about proxemics (is the use of personal space), relationship development and different climates in the workplace has helped me to be more prepared for work even more. I came into this class without much expectations and I can say that I have learned to be very observant and constantly be aware of company policies. Now with my new job, I need to learn about their policies because I am so self-conscious of everything I do there. Whenever there is no work to be done, I am tempted to go and do personal stuff online but thinking back to what I have learned just helps me not to.
On the rest of this page, you will different types of blogs I have done and work in other classes. It is an overall expression of my semester!
Enjoy!
